Description of evidence and how it demonstrated the standard:
The Success for All (SFA) tutoring plan uses tutoring assessments and weekly lesson plans with student record forms to monitor student achievement toward reading goals. A tutor uses this program to work on specific needs of a student one on one. This program prevents lower achieving students from falling behind their peers in reading achievement.
Implications for future teaching:
This tutoring experience gave me authentic practice in working individually with a student to uncover their needs, establish specific learning goals, and develop activities geared toward achieving those learning objectives. Focusing on a child’s individual reading needs through the SFA tutoring plan, helped me as a future educator in learning how to properly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses. In my future classroom, I will apply my knowledge of how to keep a student record of their strengths and weaknesses. After having discovered my tutee’s learning needs, I developed an action plan on how to improve their weaknesses. In the future, I will continue to record students’ progress and make objectives based off of their individual achievements.
I also learned the importance of making lesson alterations for individual student needs. With an excess amount of energy, my tutee had a difficulty focusing during my lessons. To redirect his energy, I gave my tutee a ball and made our reading activity into a game. This alteration successfully got my tutee on track with the lesson while creating a fun and exciting learning environment. All students are different, requiring different methods of instruction. Teachers must be aware of student differences when assessing and making decisions regarding student achievement.
